And if you’re wondering what to wear in Hua Hin/Cha-Am, ponder no more. Here are a few reminders and tips when you’re packing.
WHAT TO WEAR IN HUA HIN AND CHA-AM, THAILAND
Hua Hin and Cha-Am are popular beach destinations in Thailand. And because of their proximity to Bangkok, these beaches are also famous weekend getaway spots and summer vacation sites for Thai locals when the heat gets unbearable in the country.
Summer in a tropical country means throwing your sweaters up the attic and stacking your warm clothes at the bottom of your closet to make handy all your sleeveless blouses, short shorts and bikinis. You probably don’t plan on visiting Thailand in the summer, but it doesn’t really matter even if you’re visiting in the cool season. For the warm weather you’ll experience day in and day out in Thailand, you might as well have been visiting in summer time.
Loose-fitting shirts, cotton pants or skirts and all cool lightweight clothes are the ideal wear in Hua Hin and Cha-Am. Shirts and baggy pants or shorts for males are most appropriate beach wear while spaghetti blouses and short skirts or shorts are ok for females. Women can also wear bikinis under a large sarong or wrap-around cloth in restaurants and shopping stalls in and around the beach. But as a rule, beach wear are worn in the beaches and temple clothes in the temples.
Any casual clothes you’re comfortable with are definitely fine for sight-seeing and tours, but when you visit any temple, cover up and make sure you’re not wearing anything too revealing. This shows not only that you know what clothes are appropriate for the shrines but that you also respect their beliefs and religion. You are also expected to take your shoes off when entering the temples. But more than the clothes, your demeanor should be fitting for the place. Remember that for Thai Buddhists, the temples are not tourist attractions but a place of worship.
SOME TIPS AND REMINDERS
- Wear sunglasses. On bright days and when the sun is up, protect your eyes and wear sunglasses.
- Use sunscreen. Apply SPF50 or higher sunscreen lotion on all your exposed body parts at least 30 minutes before you go out in the sun.
- Wear wide-brimmed hats. You can also protect your eyes and your face by wearing hats, especially during midday when the sun is at its hottest. Seek shade whenever you can and don’t stay out in the sun for long. It’s nice to get a tan; a sunburn, no.
So, in general, you can strip to the barest minimum in the beach and wear casual, even backless clothes when going to the mall in town, but you have to wear respectable clothes when going to the temples. But if you’re mostly preoccupied about what to wear in Hua Hin/Cha-Am with the kind of weather Thailand has, it will help to remember that as a tropical country, it’s hot all year round.
