You’ll find no shortage of legends and myths in Thailand. In fact, there’s probably some sort of story attached to many of the popular attractions that you’ll see in the country. As folklore goes, they are often outrageous but are still believed sincerely by many. But whether it is true or not, those old stories passed down from generations to generations are what make most of the tourist attractions fascinating. In Hua Hin and Cha-Am, you’ll find one attraction that fits such a description. The Spirit Houses of Brassier Beach are part of the many interesting attractions in the area as part of the province’s legends and culture.
The Spirit Houses of Brassier Beach are located in Cosy Beach 20 minutes South East of the Pranburi province and 45 minutes South of Hua Hin. What makes the Spirit Houses of this beach particularly captivating and different from other spirit houses in a country where every house, building, establishment and places of accidents have spirit houses, are the very story of why they were created.
THE LEGEND
According to popular belief, there was once a fisherman who lived in an island with his family. The fisherman had a daughter who was so beautiful she was desired by many men. The daughter was promised by his father to two Kings, but when the Kings came to claim the daughter on the same day, the fisherman didn’t know what to do and decided to tear the body of her daughter into two pieces and then cast the pieces in the sea. Her breasts, they say, fell on the beach and the nearby villagers, out of pity for the poor girl, built a spirit house to appease her spirit. And that is why it was named Brassiere Beach.
When the spirit house was built, instead of traditional offerings like flowers and food, the villagers offered brassieres to the spirit house.
THE SPIRIT HOUSES OF BRASSIER BEACH
Nowadays, fishermen and the rest of the villagers still offer undergarments to the spirit house, but no longer to comfort the spirit of the dead: rather, they do it to bring luck in their lives. Thus, when you visit, you’ll find lots of brassieres littering the place. It’s amazing and entertaining to see them hanging in the spirit house, but at the same time, it’s a clear reminder how extremely religious and spiritual the Thai people are.
Legend and religion aside, the beach is beautiful with clear blue waters. There’s a collection of nine Mediterranean inspired cottages of different styles. The cottages are designed in blues and whites with mosaic patterns as accents. Each of the cottages is also designed to be totally private and secluded from the others. And since there are only nine cottages, the beach is truly quiet with no more than 15 people at any given time. The luxurious comfort, absolute privacy, beautiful beach and fascinating legend, all make each of the Spirit Houses of Brassier Beach a perfect getaway vacation for any tourist and a honeymoon destination for couples.
